Basic safety

Here are four basic tips for
cycling

Stay in control

Here's what you can do to stay in control of your bike, even in an emergency:

  • Make sure your bike is properly adjusted to suit you.
  • A well-fitted bike is more comfortable and easier to control.
  • Make sure your bike is in good working order before setting off.

Protect yourself

Well-fitting helmets offer protection against potentially fatal head injury. By law, cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a bicycle helmet when riding on public roads.

Wear your helmet according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Be visible and vigilant

Even if you obey all traffic regulations, there is always a risk of collision.

  • Be ready to stop for vehicles waiting at stop signs, in driveways or parking spaces.
  • Be prepared to take evasive action regarding vehicles that have just overtaken you and may turn right.
  • Use hand signals before turning or changing lanes to warn surrounding traffic.

Drive in a safe lane

Drive in the same direction as traffic to be more visible to drivers entering roads or changing lanes in the following scenarios:

  • Overtake a vehicle or another bicycle.
  • Prepare to turn left at an intersection.
  • When a lane is too narrow for a bicycle
  • Approaching a right-hand bend.
  • If the road is one-way with two or more lanes.
